After an excellent start to the season in mid-December with a lot of snow and extensive periods of sub-zero temperatures we started having an unseasonable mild period from mid-January. The bad news is that a lot of the cosmetic snow has fizzled away in the last few weeks.
The good news is that there is still plenty of snow about, to run a quality winter skills course and even to go snowholing. What snow there is, is mostly pretty hard, which is exactly what you want for using crampons and ice axes. The even better news is that there should be some new snow in the higher areas over the next week or so and there “might” be another beast from the east in early March. Have a look at the photos for what the conditions are like just now.
