This beginner’s course for sea kayaking is for people who would like to become part of a lead group on one or multi-day sea kayaking trips. It is also a prerequisite for anyone without kayaking experience to join a multi-day sea kayaking with Unexplored Scotland. Participants will learn how to efficiently paddle, get in and out of a sea kayak know what to do in case of a capsize. It will also cover other theoretical aspects.

Tour Details

The course will cover the following aspects of sea kayaking:

  • Importance of warming up
  • Carrying kayaks
  • Weather forecast
  • Basic tidal information
  • Paddle efficiently forward
  • Turning a kayak
  • Edging and holding an edge
  • Support strokes
  • Capsize and rescues

At the end of the course, you should also receive a Paddle Discover Award. This will enable you to proof your experience to other providers.

Meet at Loch Oich and introductions.

9:30amPractical Part

Running the practical part of the course. learn all the skills required for a multi-day sea kayaking trip and for the Paddle Start Award.

2:00pmTheory

pack equipment and hold the theory part of the course and have a review with every individual.

Finish4:00pm

Wrap up and finish the day.

  • Must not be taller than 190cm/6'3"
  • Must be cloth size of up to LargePlease contact us before booking if you are XL.

What You Need to Bring
  • Full set of clothing to wear while sea kayakingbase layer, fleece, trousers, normal over trousers (preferably synthetics or wool, no cotton as it cools the body when wet)
  • Full set of clothing to change into after the course
  • 1 bottle of water (0.5 – 1 litre)
  • Lunch
  • Sun cream
  • Hat or cap as sun protection
  • Sun glasses
  • Large towel
