Arisaig is often referred to as the Caribbean of Scotland. This is mostly due to the white beaches of the small islands rather than the weather. You can pick a 1 day of sea kayaking or 2 days. Were the trips are going to depend on the weather but we will try to have the first day at Arisaig and the second at an alternate location in the area.

Please contact us if you can’t find the right tour or dates.

Tour Details

Sea Kayaking Arisaig

The islands of Arisaig are some of the most beautiful islands to paddle around. The local seal colonies are very much used to sea kayakers and are as curious about us as we are about them and you get great views to Eigg and Rum.

We will paddle one of the days at the Arisaig islands and discover the sandy beaches and wildlife in the area. The second day we will paddle somewhere along the coast of Mallaig or to the south at Glenuig. It all depends on the weather and the paddling experience of the group.

The tour is a one or two day trip.

Arisaig

The Arisaig archipelago is a cluster of small islands south of Mallaig with mostly sandy beaches. The islands can be reached by walking across some of the beaches on spring tides at low water. However, you won’t have much time to get back before the water cuts you off. They are easily reached by sea kayak though. The sheltered location also makes it a good location, when the wind picks up a little. You have good chances to see seals and you might even spot an otter. The views to the islands of Skye, Eig and Rum are uninterrupted and magnificent on clear days. This is one of the best places in Scotland for sea kayaking.

Mallaig

There are some amazing beaches south of Mallaig with a large inlet to Morar. The Films Rob Roy and Local Hero had scenes shot in the area. The area has some of the most beautiful beaches in Scotland with great views to the small isles and the Isle of Skye. Alternatively, the trip could also lead us to Inverie, which is one of the most remote villages in mainland UK and can only be reached on foot or across the water.

Glenuig

The area around Glenuig has a great mix of small sea cliffs and beaches. There is also a bothy in the area that has some rare Viking remains at the beach. But you need to know what to look for to see them. This area is a bit more exposed and should only be paddled on good days.

Loch Moidart

The loch is one of the most sheltered places in the area. It also changes a lot with the tides and you can see how some land disappears at high water and some beaches get revealed at low water. In between, you get occasionally some fast currents but this won’t be any problem for the group. We could also have a closer look at Castle Tiuram with can be accessed from the water at any time (unlike if you walk to the castle).

Itinerary

Day 1Arisaig, Scotland

Meet up in the village of Arisaig and then drive to the location to start sea kayaking. The day should take us to the small islands off Arisaig. There are plenty of sandy beaches to land and in some of the sheltered areas, you can spot some seals and with some luck an otter.
At the end of the day, we would like to involve the whole group in the planning of the 2nd day. This is optional if everyone likes to learn how to plan a sea kayaking trip.

Day 2Alternate Trip, Scotland

Depending on the weather we could paddle at the coast south of Mallaig with a lot of beaches and where a scene in the Rob Roy movie was filmed. Another option are to paddle at Glenuig where you have some beutiful coastline and views to the isles of Eigg, Rum and Muick. We could also sea kayak at Loch Moidart were we have a very sheltered area which some smaller islands, a tide that changes the landscape and a Castle Tiuram that can only be accessd by land at low tide. We can access it at any time.
